Because I still have some thoughts to express about mangas

Time is running short, and I wanted to continue to speak a bit about manga and the power of images. Consequently, I went through another essay...

The power of images.

To start with:

The power of image was discovered since the beginning of the 20th century. Robert Capa during operation Overlord is one of the very first to use it.

The power of image made the American loose the war in Vietnam, the power of image decided of the hour and place were Desert Storm - for light purposes - was meant to start.

Because of the power of image, American invented TV - Oliver’s’ Stone Natural Born Killer is good illustration - while Japanese developed mangas and anime.

Mangas and animes have a great power. A power to denunciate or/and a power to escape.

Manga to denunciate

The manga Shamo is a wonderful way to support this vision of a manga.

Here is the story: “Ryo Narushima was a genius and looked to have no trouble of getting into Tokyo University and joining the elite of society. However, that summer something cracked inside Ryo's head. With a small knife he brutally murdered both of his parents only leaving his sister alive. Called parent murder he goes through his life from now on.”

Shamo is the story about a kid who basically refuse the salary man future. It is the story of what happen if you leave the system.

Manga to escape

Japan’s reality is far from glamour. Manga, is also made to travel far from it. Better than these virtual world - denunciated by the manga Hack sign -, there is One Piece.

Here is the story: “In a world of pirates, one man wants to become the greatest of them all: Monkey D. Luffy, who gained strange powers from eating the cursed Gum-Gum Fruit! Luffy and his crew, including Nami, a thief and swindler, and Roronoa Zolo, master of the three-sword fighting style, sail the Seven Seas in search of the legendary treasure "One Piece."

One Piece is a wonderful story full of strange creatures and amazing machines. The only limit is the reader’s imagination.

The power is in the characters

As a tool, mangas and animes are surely powerful. They aim for the heart and everyone’s sensibility. What Kusturica once said concerning TV is equally true for mangas: “mangas kills quicker than bullets”.

But, more than wonderful sets, epic universes or phantasmagoric magic, the power of mangas lies within it’s characters: they are us, they are the readers. Fragile, lost, lonesome... all falling or fallen angels.

The end of it all

No evil is pure evil in mangas or animes just like no good is pure good. That’s the story of every manga. There are no such things as alchemist laws but there is always a price to pay. And if thoughts are gray well, just like manga, actions and consequently life is in black and white.

When the typhoon made me come with a lot of thoughts about manga...

Since it was raining that day, I couldn't go to any StarBucks. Very inspired I wrote this essay about manga...

These words you can’t translate.

While watching an anime, there are some words that clearly fall hardly in the ear. Same for the translation that is to be read as subtitles to the image.

In Animes, words often come out in English, even though speaking Japanese.

In Animes, subtitles in English are full of Japanese words impossible to translate.

A · Starting with titles.

It is common to see English titles. While some Animes are called Tenjou Tenge, Dorohedoro, Keroro, Ichigo 100% or Abara. Some other are clearly in English, for instance : Death Note, Gundam, Monster or even Blame !

Continuing with names :
However, it doesn’t end there. Even characters have English names. While some characters are called Japanese like : Sakura, Sasuke, Anakari or Kenzo Tenma. Some characters are also called : Light, Johan, Nina or Bob Poundmax.
Ending with spoken language :
Key objects are also often in English while the rest of the manga is in Japanese.
For instance One piece is the key object every one must found in the manga of the same name. Millennium is the name of the criminal organization in Gun grave. Exile is the lost space-ship in Last Exile.
Or even words are in English. For instance « Thanku », literally « Thank you » in English.

B · What about these Japanese words that can’t be translated :

It often appears that words are part of a lager cultural background. Consequently, these words can’t never be translated in English. For instance there is those Shinigami (death gods) that are often represented in mangas. As well as Akuma (devils). Translating them would be a big mistake since it is not the same translation. And there are even more examples, such as Chakra (soul energy) or Shikai and Bankai. As well as there is no word to translate the exact nuances of Ara kiri. To explore furthermore our explanation we will take the example of the two more successful anime nowadays : Bleach and Naruto.

Bleach :

Every characters in Bleach is carrying a Zanpakutu. It is always very powerful. It’s name influence it’s power. It is hard to translate Zanpakutu but let’s say it is more or less a Katana.
Here are a few Zanpakutu and their use dictated by their names, never to be translated.

Hyourinmaru : it literally means « Ice ring ».
With a cry of "Souten ni zase!" (Sit upon the frozen heavens), Captain Hitsugaya doesn't so much make Hyourinmaru itself change as he does summon a giant dragon made of water. An eastern dragon, not the western fire-breathing type, it's probably several hundred gallons of near-freezing water that he can point and send anywhere he wants. Both dragon and chain radiate such a chill that any water, even the moisture in the air, starts to freeze. So even if you don't drown in the deluge that is the dragon, the water still soaking you will freeze you to your core.

Ryujin Jakka : « flowing flame blade ».
Along with Hyourinmaru, Ryuujin Jakka is an elemental blade, though in this case the element is fire. Reciting the sentence "Banshou issai haijin to nase" (reduce all to ash), Yama-jii sets Ryuujin Jakka on fire. Flame sprouts from the hilt and blade, wrapping around Yama-jii in one huge conflagration. The blade itself remains in his hand, though it's hard to see through all the flame. It doesn't take much imagine to figure out that Yama-jii can probably manipulate all that fire with a craftsman's precision.

Senbon Zakura: “Thousand Cherry Trees”
Speaking the short word "chire" (scatter), Captain Kuchiki makes Senbon Zakura's blade disappear. It isn't gone completely, it has just disintegrated into millions of tiny, razor-thin metal petals you can only see when they catch the light and wink, like the quick flutter of falling cherry petals. Captain Kuchiki mentally controls this razor cloud, and can slice somebody to ribbons without them even seeing what hit them.

Naruto:

In Naruto, all that is in the fields o frealms is kept in Japenese. All powers and magical seals are given in Japanese even in the English translation. I have chosen the example of what is called “Kekkai Genkai” in Naruto. Literally, it means “advance bloodline limit”. In Naruto, it is about powers that are transmitted uniquely by blood. These are very powerful powers. The more important ones are (ones again, never translated even in English versions).
Byakugan: “White eyes”
The Byakugan, literally White Eyes, (or Evil Eye as it is known in the English translations) is a very special condition of the eye that occurs naturally in all members of the Hyuuga clan. Used mainly as a taijutsu technique, the Byakugan gives it's user many great abilities including the ability to have a 360 degree field of vision, except for one tiny blind spot behind the first thoracic vertebra, this tiny spot is the only known weakness of this special ability. With the Byakugan activated it's user has the ability to detect anything that moves around them in a 50 foot radius, making the Byakugan a difficult task to fight against. When used with chakra the Byakugan becomes more powerful and can see through most solid matter over extremely long distances and allows it's user to see the inner coil system of the enemy, opening them to an attack on their tenketsu (Chakra Holes) by the hand of the juken (Gentle Fist).
Sharingan : « Copy Wheel eyes »
The Sharingan, literally Copy Wheel Eye, is a very special condition of the eye that occurs naturally in some members of the Uchiha Clan. Most notably the Sharingan's most well known ability is to be able to memorize any technique that it has been a witness to including nijutsu, genjutsu and taijutsu techniques. Other abilities of this very special eye include hypnosis, allowing it's user to suggest actions and thoughts to the opponent. The Sharingan also has the very useful ability to see through any illusionary technique.

Shikotsumyaku: “Corpse Bone Pulse”
It belongs to the Kaguya clans. Through this technic, they have a frightening and graphic ability to manipulate their bone structure, they can control the density, the shape the movement and the number of their bones and use them as weapons that are as sharp as a dagger and very destructive to their opponent. The bodies of those who possess this bloodline are virtually indestructible with their special offense even allowing them to shoot bones out of their fingertips that are as sharp as a spear, any point of contact on their body would cause great damage to their opponent. The most powerful techniques this unique clan possesses are it's many dances that are named after flowers.

I found my new Shimballa...

As lieutenant colonel in the State military, I often am sent in recruitment missions. I am in charge for tracking down and test one's talent for alchemy. If this person potential is proven, I offer him a chance to become State Alchemists and to bring him out at Central City, where we are currently stationed.
Today's mission is a special mission. You see, life in Central City army's office is no different from others. We work, train, make tons of photocopies for administrativ purposes... and drink gallons of coffee. Here is the major issue: we have people for all these tasks... except to make coffee. I mean, we have water alchemists, stone alchemists, air alchemists, iron alchemists, but no coffee alchemists! It is a really rare skill and consequently for me, a tough mission. If you take in consideration, the fact that I am a rather talented fire alchemist and that I always have to keep near fire places (you never know which fire I might set unconsciously). It is REALLY a tough mission for me.
So there I was, looking for a coffee alchemist, in Shibuya fire street (best place to hang around for me in case of not wanted fire glowing out of my hands).
And there it was: a Starbucks on Shibuya fire street! (the alchemist's gods must have been on my side today).

I entered... and the rest is confidential. You know, it is for military reasons so, I hope you will understand!
However I can't help revealing that the place was great: since there were full access computers with internet: I could send my administrative report asap after meeting my knew found coffee alchemist.

Even if undercover, I can give you my name... I am, full metal alchemist's, fire alchemist Roy Mustang!

Yeah I know what you are thinking: how cool is that for lighting barbecues?!!!!

When I had "one piece" of golden chocolate coin...

I love hidden place and I love luxury... what can I do against it? You see, that's because I am pirate. Oh don't worry, i am not a terrible one neither a fancy-wasted looking one (nor Barbarossa or Jack Sparrow). I just like adventure and like the idea of carrying my straw hat all over the seven seas.
Since I am quite young, I always get mixed up with maneuvers and always get into terrible fights with my crew. Consequently I spend more time on earth, waiting for my ship to be repaired and my crew to re-united, than on sea.
It was one of these typical days when i had nothing to do but hang around, my rubber arms and fist deep into my pockets. The ship capsized in Tokyo bay. I was walking in Tokyo's streets looking for some hidden places and luxury... as always.
So I was in Ginza (you don't need a treasure map to get that this the place for every decent pirate to be). And at a corner... A secret place! I want straight to it, I could see golden coins on the counter just through the window.
The emblem of the place was a sea creature... and it was called Starbucks!
Sweet! Any guesses about my identity? Come one, I am quite famous after all.

I entered the place, my heart bitting fast.
I'll give a few impressions:

Of course, it was too good to be true... the coins were made of chocolate. However, I spent a lovely time and ate all I could (I am REALLY a big eater).
I will now reveal my identity... You bounties, don't look for me, i am already gone! For I am Luffy, the greatest pirate in all manga's history!

I want to go back to those days when everything was free

I like hanging out in coffees. It always makes me remember about a long time ago. About Jolice being behind the counter cleaning glasses for us four. Many things have changed since. First of them, the fact that I am now immortal. I had to die first, my best friend killed me, but I was reborn.
That is another reason why I like these coffee place, there is nothing like a hot double fudge latte with whipped cream to make temporarily forget the coldness of death.
When I choose a coffee there are some limits I always have to take in consideration. For instance, since I hang around with my coffin on my back, I have to choose a coffee with space to move around.
I have chosen Starbucks because they have that kind of space.
Today I have been to this very special Starbucks down one of Mitsubishi's buildings. The name is Marunouchi Mitsubishi Trust Bank building.

You see, I have always been attracted by banks. I used to be a big time thieves in my young days. No wonder why I ended having a warm drink in one of them. Plus this building ringed a bell. It just looked like Millenniom headquarter. Millenniom was the biggest mafia organization ever created. And I was the boss. With my friend Harry McDowell. The one that killed me.
Remember my name? I gave a lot of clues... considering the fact that during all my story I hardly ever speak! Oh yeah... normally I am the silent type...
Take extra thoughts while I give a few grades to the place.

Well my name is Brandon Heat. I might not look friendly, but believe me, in some dirty situations, I am your best friend!
You just take a look to my casket on my back and tell me it is far better than these capsule hotels!

My golem is an umbrella and it's name is Lero... what's my name?

My oh my, it's almost Halloween... I always feel good on Halloween. I love these pumpkins. Well, I love the nasty grim they wear! In fact my face, also, always wear a nasty grim... But that is normal since I am the bad guy. And to think of it my umbrella's pumpkin also has this nasty grim.
But let us stop chatting, I have the world to destroy (nothing less) and my all family feel pretty hasty about it.
Here we go, I have to find a little nice place that would just be like me to enjoy a pumpkin coffee. I walk down the street, this huge creepy smile on my face and this huge Tim Burtonien's hat on my head. I walk... To be honest, you see I am more a hopper (i have rabbit ears, that would be to bad to simply walk)...
Hop hop hop, there I am, I like the feeling... A giant spider... sounds like Halloween... and it's name is Mama, again I have always been a family man...
A mechanical stair? I love mechanics, all my army of bad guys is mechanical! They call them Akuma...
A little guess concerning my identity?
Down the mechanical stairs there is a Starbucks... What is the name of this place, Tokyo Hat?
A hat, mechanical thing, coffee shop full of Halloween stuff. I just love it!

Astroboy was just a warm up

Today is a very special day... it's a day for celebration. It is the anniversary of the day when I almost destroyed the planet. All is in a hollow about that time, people would tell me I kept repeating and asking "who I was". Hopefully, since then, I have found out.
For intending to destroy all forms of living creatures I have some excuse: there was this men called Duke red going after me and there was all this story going on about Marduk...
Still can't guess who i am?
It's alright, again, back in these days I also had troubles knowing who I was...

But I have to hurry. I have to comb my blond hair. You know I have beautiful long blond hair. Sometimes, when I look up towards the sky, my hair starts shining even more than the sun. In fact all my body starts to shine as well.
I took a map: In order to celebrate I have to found a Ziggurat. Just as the one to which i was the key...
Still no clue?

So I walk and walk... And here I am, standing in front of my all knew Ziggurat. It's called Shibuya's Starbuck. It really looks as the one in my old town.

I enter and feel at home. Of course there are no throne for me there. But I take it as a good sign, it means that underneath this Ziggurat there no weapons of mass destruction.

Oh! sorry to keep hitching who with the question of my identity. My name is Mitchy, I am that pretty face you have seen in Metropolis.

By the way... how was that original soundtrack going on when reaching the end of the anime? Yes I remember....

"I can't stop loving you...."
Thank you Ray, in fact I feel as singing it again...
Starbucks... "I can't stop loving you
So I've made up my mind
To live in memory
Of old lone-some times...."
